What if companies aimed beyond going carbon neutral and toward being actively regenerative?
The Trend
Carbon neutral is becoming the floor rather than the ambition, with a growing cadre of businesses aiming to leave the environment better than they found it. Carbon negative bricks, wood, vodka and knitwear are already on sale, and the brands making them treat a positive legacy as the point rather than a marketing line. In the future normal, we will see an acceleration in companies that go carbon negative, regenerate the environment and measure themselves by what they put back.
The Instigator
IKEA alone generates around 0.1 percent of the world’s annual greenhouse gas emissions, which may explain why it set one of the most ambitious environmental goals of any business: becoming climate positive by 2030, requiring an average 70 percent cut in each product’s climate footprint. The Billy bookcase makes the approach concrete. The bestselling bookcase in the world, with over 120 million units sold since 1978, was redesigned with paper foil instead of plastic veneer and snap fittings instead of nails, so it can now be taken apart and rebuilt rather than binned.
Imagining The Future Normal
What if AI could redesign everyday products as lower impact and higher quality?
NASA has used AI to design spacecraft parts that are lighter, stronger, and require fewer materials than those created by humans through traditional engineering methods. One promise for AI is to help optimize every product, using novel new materials and enabling easy disassembly, reuse, and more consistent recycling.
Might technology steer us to low-tech, nature-based solutions?
Regenerative farming is often rooted in traditional techniques. As AI models factor in more data, from carbon footprints to biodiversity data and social impact metrics, their analyses might reveal that simpler solutions (like wetlands for wastewater treatment) yield better overall outcomes than complex industrial processes.
Can AI enable more collaborative ecosystem partnerships?
Impact-focused leaders know that the challenges we face are bigger than any one organization. What if AI could help identify and facilitate unlikely partnerships to create regenerative systems? Knowledge sharing and collective action (powered by AI matchmaking and coordination) could help entire industries move beyond individual corporate commitments.
