I have to admit, when first reading this story I thought the idea of giving seniors with dementia a lifelike doll whose chest rises and falls as if it had a heartbeat felt like a depressing manipulation. Yet this article points out that the effect of these dolls on the demeanor of some dementia patients has been nearly magical. They have reengaged with the world and delight from holding the dolls. My reaction to reading the headline and then the story was one of shifting my perspective on something that I initially dismissed as wierd but now appreciate. That alone made it worth reading.
